The Twelve Apostles are isolated pillars of limestone rock formation, majestically standing in the Southern Ocean on The Great Ocean Road at Port Campbell National Park. Blasting winds and the relentless, pounding sea attack the soft limestone cliffs. Over time with erosion caves are formed in the cliffs, caves become arches and arches become rock pillars up to 45 metres high. These are currently eroded by the sea at a rate of approx. 2cm per year. As recently as July 2005, one of the remaining Apostles collapsed into the sea leaving only 8 of the original 12 remaining. Of course this picture does the reality no justice.
This is one of my favourite places in the whole world...it even beats a Santorini Greek Isle sunset viewed fron the cliff-face of Thira ...and that's saying something.
